Part-Time Facilities Maintenance Coordinator (Church Sexton)

Grace Lutheran Church is seeking a dependable, organized person to care for our buildings, equipment, and grounds. Our Church Sexton combines hands-on maintenance with coordinating contractors, volunteers, building access, and event setup.
We are looking for someone who notices what needs attention, communicates clearly, and follows tasks through to completion. Your work will help keep our facility safe, welcoming, and ready for worship, preschool, education, fellowship, and community activities.
Responsibilities
- Perform routine minor repairs involving lighting, doors, locks, faucets, toilets, furniture, and other building items.
- Coordinate and oversee scheduled service providers and groundskeeping, communicating outstanding needs to church leadership.
- Inspect buildings and grounds, identify maintenance concerns, keep repair records, and report larger projects to the Properties Committee.
- Coordinate building access and security with office staff, including opening and securing the facility for worship and events.
- Adjust thermostats and lighting for scheduled building use.
- Arrange tables, chairs, and other furniture for activities, weddings, funerals, and special events; restore rooms afterward.
- Purchase approved maintenance supplies, maintain inventory, and organize storage areas.
- Ensure required inspections and upkeep of fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, emergency lighting, and other safety equipment.
- Check gutters, downspouts, and drainage areas; inspect the property following severe weather.
- Assist with occasional major cleaning projects, seasonal decorations, snow and ice removal, signage, and furniture loans.
- Work cooperatively with church staff, volunteers, members, and visitors.
Qualifications
- Experience in building maintenance, facilities care, repair work, or a related field. At least one year of relevant experience is preferred; demonstrated practical skills will also be considered.
- Ability to perform minor repairs and recognize when specialized professional service is needed.
- Strong organization, time management, communication, and follow-through.
- Ability to work independently and coordinate the work of contractors and volunteers.
- Ability to communicate in English sufficiently to understand instructions, work safely with equipment and chemicals, and communicate with vendors.
- Valid driver’s license.
- A courteous, service-minded approach and respect for the church’s ministry and activities.
Schedule and Working Conditions
This is an ongoing, part-time position of up to 20 hours per week. Work includes weekday responsibilities and availability for Sunday worship, scheduled events, and occasional evening, weekend, or emergency needs. Specific scheduling expectations will be discussed and arranged as needed during the interview.
Duties involve indoor and outdoor work, standing, bending, reaching, and moving furniture and supplies. The position may require lifting or moving items up to 25 pounds and transporting heavier items up to 150 pounds with mechanical assistance. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals to perform essential duties.
The Sexton works under the supervision of the Senior Pastor with his Church Office Administrator and the chair of the Properties Committee. Pay is $25/hour, paid twice monthly.
