Lead Pastor - Position Description
Purpose
The Lead Pastor (Senior Pastor) serves as the first among equals shepherd, preacher, teacher, and spiritual leader of New Harmony Church. This position exists to glorify God by leading the church in fulfilling its mission through faithful exposition of Scripture(Bible), disciple-making, evangelism, worship, and servant leadership in accordance with the church Constitution and Bylaws.
Mission Alignment
Lead with the Elders the congregation consistent with New Harmony Church's mission, values, and doctrinal statement.
Reports To
Board of Elders; accountable to the Plurality of Elders as provided in the Constitution and Bylaws.
Unique Responsibilities
In addition to the shared Elder responsibilities, the Lead Pastor is responsible to:
- Faithfully preach and teach the Bible as the primary preaching Elder while ensuring other Elders have opportunities to preach according to their giftedness.
- Serve as a Staff Elder and first among equals, working collaboratively with the plurality of Elders.
- Lead all Elder, Staff, and Church meetings, set agendas, and ensure transparency among Elders, Deacons, and the Congregation.
- Act as the voice of the Elder body to the church: casting vision, leading business and family meetings, communicating plans, and calling the church to prayer and fasting.
- Shepherd and administrate the church staff.
Qualifications
Demonstrates biblical qualifications of an elder (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9), agreement with church doctrine, ordained or ordainable by a Southern Baptist church. A biblical degree from an accredited evangelical seminary or at least five years of pastoral leadership is preferred but not required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Biblical in-depth preaching, counseling, leadership development, conflict resolution, administration, communication, strategic planning, financial stewardship, and team leadership.
Physical Requirements
Ability to communicate publicly for extended periods; frequently stand, walk, sit, climb stairs, lift up to 25 pounds occasionally; travel locally; work evenings and weekends; perform pastoral visitation in homes, hospitals, and community settings. Reasonable accommodations may be made for qualified individuals, where consistent with the essential ministerial functions of the position.
Performance Expectations
Maintain exemplary Christian character, support church doctrine, develop leaders, grow disciples, provide annual ministry goals, maintain confidentiality, and participate in continuing education.
Ministerial Exception
This position is a ministerial position whose primary duties are spiritual leadership and religious instruction. Employment decisions are made consistent with applicable law governing religious organizations.
