Position Overview:
The Church Custodian supports the mission of Hope United Methodist Church by maintaining a clean, safe, functional, and welcoming environment for worship, ministry programs, staff, and visitors. This position provides routine custodial services, event setup support, and light preventative maintenance, ensuring that church facilities are properly cared for and ready for use.
Essential Job Functions:
- Perform daily, weekly, and seasonal cleaning of sanctuary, offices, classrooms, hallways, bathrooms, kitchens and building entrances include dusting, mopping, vacuuming, sweeping and emptying trash.
- Ensure pre- and post-worship and program setup and breakdown including lighting, heating/cooling checks, and table/chair setup and removal.
- Provide routine preventative and light maintenance: changing light bulbs, check (lube) pumps, change filters, minor carpentry (doors/hardware),. Monitor electrical and plumbing systems Monitor electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems for potential issues and report concerns promptly.
- Assist with carpet cleaning, stripping, mopping, waxing and buffing of specified areas (fellowship hall, kitchen, etc.).
- Responsible for clean, orderly and safe work environment.
- Remove snow and ice from sidewalks and building entries as needed.
- Use cleaning supplies, tools, and equipment safely and according to guidelines.
- Report safety hazards or building concerns to supervisor or Board of Trustees.
- Must be a fully devoted Christ follower and support the ministry of Hope UMC. This individual’s commitment to Christ will be evident in his/her personal life, family, relationships and ministry. His/her daily walk with God will be an example to others with which he/she interacts.
- Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
- Minimum of 2 years of custodian/janitorial or related experience.
- Knowledgeable of electrical and plumbing.
- Must be a self-starter and able to work independently.
- Must be conscientious, problem solver and a HUMC team player.
- Must support the mission of Hope United Methodist Church.
Working Conditions:
- Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends. This role requires a flexible schedule based on need; between 20 to 30 hours per week.
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Ability and willingness to work off ladders and lifts.
- May work on hands and knees.
- Ability to bend, stoop and lift.
