Rate of Pay: $22.50/ hour
Avenue Kids Camp is looking for a passionate and energetic Drama Counselor to join our team this summer! You'll inspire young performers and help campers discover the joy of storytelling, creativity, and self-expression through theatre arts.
Position overview
As our Drama Counselor, you will plan and lead age-appropriate drama activities for campers in rising grades 1 through 6. You'll design engaging lessons that introduce foundational theatre skills — including acting, improvisation, voice, movement, and storytelling — while fostering confidence, teamwork, and creativity in every child.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and deliver daily drama sessions tailored to each age group (rising 1st–6th grade)
- Teach core theatre skills including acting basics, improvisation, vocal projection, and stage presence
- Create a fun, inclusive, and encouraging environment where every camper feels safe to participate
- Adapt curriculum and activities to meet the developmental needs of different age groups
- Collaborate with fellow counselors to integrate drama into broader camp programming
- Organize and lead a culminating performance or showcase at the end of the session
- Supervise campers throughout all activities to ensure safety and well-being
- Communicate positively and professionally with campers, families, and camp staff
Qualifications
Required
- Experience in theatre, drama, or performing arts (education, performance, or both)
- Genuine enthusiasm for working with children ages 6–12
- Strong communication, creativity, and classroom management skills
- Ability to adapt teaching style to different age levels and learning needs
Preferred
- Background in education, child development, or youth programming
- Experience directing or choreographing youth productions
- First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain prior to start date)

Physical Requirements
- Ability to actively supervise and engage children of all age groups throughout the camp day
- Must be able to stand, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, and sit on the floor for extended periods
- Ability to lead and participate in indoor and outdoor activities, including games, crafts, worship, group discussions, and recreational events
- Ability to lift, carry, and move camp materials, supplies, and equipment weighing up to 25–30 pounds
- Ability to respond quickly and appropriately to children’s needs and emergency situations
- Sufficient vision, hearing, mobility, and communication skills to ensure effective supervision and child safety
- Ability to maintain attention, patience, energy, and a positive attitude while working with children in a fast‑paced environment
Work Environment
- Work is performed on the Wheeler Avenue Baptist Church campus, including classrooms, activity rooms, gymnasium, fellowship spaces, outdoor recreational areas, and off-campus field trips
- Environment is active, energetic, and child‑focused, with frequent movement and interaction
- Moderate to high noise levels due to children’s activities, music, and group programming
- Exposure to varying weather conditions during outdoor activities
- Work schedule may include early mornings, extended daytime hours, and occasional special events
