Church Custodian (Part Time)

Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and responsible individual to join our team as a church custodian (i.e. Sexton). The Sexton plays a vital role in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall appearance of the grounds and facilities. This position requires a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while contributing to a respectful and welcoming environment.
This is a 3-month, temporary, part-time position which may be extended beyond 3 months. This is primarily a daytime position, 3-5 days per week, totaling 17 hours, including Sundays and occasional evenings and Saturdays. We need a person who is both dependable and flexible. This position requires ability to shift hours to provide coverage when needed, for example, weddings, funerals, and special programs throughout the year. In most cases, the Sexton would be aware of a change in schedule at least one week in advance.
Responsibilities
- Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of the grounds, walkways, and church buildings.
- Perform routine cleaning duties, such as sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, cleaning and stocking bathrooms, and emptying trash.
- Be available every Sunday to open the Church prior to worship, assist others, and close the Church (secure all doors and arm alarm system) after worship.
- Be available on Saturdays, as needed, for weddings and funerals.
- Be available on weeknights, as needed, for evening activities.
- Be available for emergency situations, should they arise.
- Attend weekly Staff meeting.
- Plan work activities around weekly calendar of events and tasks identified during the Staff meeting, as directed by the Pastor.
- Provide occasional support and coverage for the Cleaning Custodian.
- Seasonally- remove leaves around building entrances, remove snow (snowblower and shovel) around building entrances and walkways, salt walkways and parking lot when icy.
- Assist with set up for events, including setting up tables and chairs, removing trash before and after event, remove and store tables and chairs after events.
- Set up/remove bell tables in the sanctuary, as needed.
- Set up/remove projector screen, as needed.
- Set up/remove chairs and music stands for musicians, as needed.
- Assist in set up and removal seasonal drapes and altar cloth, banners, candles, etc.
- Climb step ladder to update hymnal boards.
- Ensure that all gathering spaces, offices, and bathrooms are clean and well-stocked with necessary supplies.
- Monitor the condition of the property and report any maintenance or safety issues to the Pastor.
- Provide assistance during services or events as required, ensuring a respectful atmosphere.
- Uphold the standards of care for sacred spaces and contribute to a welcoming environment for visitors.
Requirements
- Previous experience in custodial or facility maintenance work is required.
- Ability to perform basic plumbing, mechanical and electrical tasks is highly desired.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Physical stamina to perform manual labor tasks, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
- Excellent communication skills and a respectful demeanor towards visitors and staff.
- Flexibility in working hours, including weekends or evenings as necessary for events or services.
- Boiler maintenance and HVAC experience is highly desired, but not required.

Pay: $18.00 per hour (paid bi-weekly)

Work Location: In person
